Christmas Vocabulary (Part Three)
This is the third and last part of the Christmas Vocabulary lesson. You will find the previous lessons here and here.
Don’t forget to have a pen and a piece of paper. You should also have a dictionary nearby to check the meaning and the pronunciation of the words you don’t know.

You must have noticed that the quiz was about Christmas decorations. What decorations do you usually put on your Christmas tree?
In Africa, we mostly hang homemade decorations in the house (mostly made of paper or leaves) but not every house has a Christmas tree. Christmas trees are usually plastic and are bought in supermarkets. They can be expensive too.
What we love the most is preparing different types of food to share with our family and friends.
Picture # 2: Christmas Food
Each country has its own traditions when it comes to Christmas food. Do you know all the food that is listed above? Would you like to taste some? We surely would like to!
In Malawi, people usually eat rice and chicken and drink Fanta, Coca-Cola or thobwa ( a traditional drink) on Christmas Day. What do you eat and drink?
We also use special cutlery and decorate our houses in a special way. Do you do the same?
It is a special time for everyone. We often visit other homes to see how they have decorated their living-rooms.
It is just incredible!
Picture # 3: Christmas Desserts
These desserts look so delicious! Do you know how to make some? Are they difficult to make? What do you usually eat at Christmas?
We bake cakes too and prepare puff-puffs or mandasi in our local language. They are so tasty! Bread with margarine, especially in the villages, is also considered as a special treat!
We love the Christmas festival.

Sharing food and presents with our loved ones enables us to embrace the spirit of Christmas. We are just happy to find comfort in each other’s company.

These are common Christmas activities around the world. Are there any activities we have forgotten in this picture? What is your favourite activity?
In Africa, we usually go to church to sing Christmas carols and celebrate the birth of Jesus. Children often participate in nativity plays and they are always fun to watch. After church, we go home to a hearty lunch usually composed of rice with chicken and cabbage salad.
Wealthier families also make a short trip to the lake or visit their families back in the village. Everybody looks forward to this break and it is always a moment of sadness when everything must come to an end.
We are also a little sad to end this Christmas Vocabulary series. We enjoyed preparing these lessons and had a lot of fun making the different types of worksheets that we used.
