Your Ideal City
Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire; you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.
~George Bernard Shaw
All cities were built from the imagination of people. Ideas, designs and architectural plans came before the concrete. Ideals were turned into reality and new places of living were born.
If you were given the opportunity to imagine your ideal city, what would you think of first? What matters the most to you as far as cities are concerned? Do you care about houses? What about infrastructure?
Housing
A house is a place where we spend a lot of time. Obviously, we want this place to be perfect for us and our children. What type of housing would you ideally have?
Would you rather live in a villa or a penthouse? The former would probably be located in a low density neighbourhood while the latter would be in the city centre where you would have a fast-paced lifestyle.
Sample Description
Everyone will want to live in my ideal city. There will be more detached houses than flats. We will ensure that building materials respect environmental and aesthetic standards. The neighbourhoods will be children-friendly and families from all backgrounds will enjoy living in this city.
Education
This is, of course, an important factor. When we want to move to a new place, we always think of what type of educational opportunities we might get.
What type of schools will you have in your ideal city? Would they be conventional or do you imagine something revolutionary? Will you have a variety of schooling options from which parents and students might choose from?
Sample description
Learning in my ideal city will prove to be an exciting and life-changing experience for people of all ages. Schools will be built with teachers’ and students’ welfare in mind. Their wellbeing will be my priority. I envision buildings that will be as comfortable enough as to be compared to our homes. Syllabuses will have content that will be continuously updated in order to reflect our ever-changing lifestyles. No child will be left behind and I will make sure that all learning styles and physical profiles are taken into consideration when designing the schools in my city.
Communication(s)
Communication and transport are essential aspects to consider when you are imagining your ideal city. How will people go from one place to another? How will citizens send and receive information? Will it be easy and practical for them to accomplish such tasks?
Technology is now playing a major role in people’s lives. Will you have free wi-fi services like in Estonian cities? Will you encourage the building of cycle tracks and walking paths to protect the environment? Will public transport be very cheap or free so that people will see a real advantage in using such means of transport? Will you subsidise the purchase of hybrid cars or the use of carsharing applications such as PANEK in Poland?
Sample Description
My ideal city will be a model for development. All types of communications will be made easier for people from all walks of life thanks to our united efforts. Considering the fact that we are in the 21st century, I will take advantage of everything that technology has to offer. Internet connection will be free to facilitate the transmission of data. I will make certain that this is not time and energy-consuming. The provision of eco-friendly modes of transport will also be pursued knowing that we only have one planet and we need to protect it for future generations.
Healthcare
Our physical and metal well-being are assets that should not be plundered. What will your ideal city have in order to take this salient factor into acccount?
Have you ever lived in a city where if you went to a hospital, there were more chances of not getting the care you wanted unless you paid a hefty sum of money? Well, I did and I do not want to go through that experience again. In my ideal city, everybody will be able to afford healthcare regardless of their background.
Sample Description
My ideal city will be a place of hope. Everyone will have access to affordable healthcare. I will buld state-of-the-art hospitals and will train qualified and professional doctors to take medical care into the 21st century. Citizens will not have to travel far in order to access health facilities. As we all know, prevention is better than cure, so I will ensure that health workshops are conducted across the city to raise awareness about certain health hazards or risks.
Administration and Amenities
Fo all this to be possible, my ideal city will have to be well-governed by responsible and caring people that can be held accountable for their deeds. Leaders will be respected and encouraged to do their job and their results will be recognised and appreciated.
There will be a constant supply of piped water and electricity and roads will be repaired whenever necessary so as not to disrupt citizens’ lives. Moreover, hard work and efforts will be duly rewarded.
Sample Description
City life can be enjoyable provided the right amenities are available. Culture will be a priority in my ideal city, hence museums, libraries and creative centres will be easy to access. After a hard day’s work, people will also be able to enjoy themselves by going to the cinema or the opera. Sporting activities will be encouraged by the building of swimming pools, athletics tracks, tennis courts, golf courses, tennis and basketball courts. It will also be child’s play to do one’s shopping for food or clothes as shops will not be located too far from where people live.
What about you?
