Podcast: Southern African countries belonging to the SADC

This video clip is a quick overview of 15 countries that belong to the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The SADC is an inter-governmental organisation that aims at promoting sustainable economic growth, peace and security in the south of Africa through the cooperation and integration of its member states. This includes alleviating poverty, evolving common political values and protecting the environment.

Currently, this economic and political institution deals with issues that touch on Gender, Science and Technology, Information and Technology, HIV and Aids, Statistics, the Environment and Sustainable Development and the Private Sector.

The Heads of States meet during the annual Summit where they take salient decisions affecting the member countries of 258 million people. The other meeting is the Council of Ministers which also takes place every year and is graced by one national minister from each SADC country.

The organisation dates back to 1980 when it was formerly known as the Southern African Development Coordination Conference. The SADCC became the SADC on August 17, 1992.

The original members were Angola, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Swaziland, Lesotho and Botswana.
